A Beginner’s Guide to FITNESS
The Do’s and Don’ts of how to start your journey
Every night I say, ‘I need to get started’… but then I don’t. What finally worked? Having a start date and someone expecting me to show up.
Is Now the time..?
So… is this your year? I sure hope so!
Whether you’re thinking about joining a gym, finding a trainer, or just want to feel better in your body, getting started can feel like the hardest part.
A new client recently told me something I hear all the time:
If that sounds familiar, don’t worry—you’re in good company. That’s why I put together this list of smart “DOs” (and a few “don’ts”) to help you get moving with more confidence and a lot less pressure.
🎯 Do: Set a Goal that’s right for YOU
It doesn’t have to be big or fancy. Maybe you want to feel stronger carrying groceries. Maybe it’s rocking a dress on girls’ night. Or maybe you just want to wake up with more energy. Whatever it is, own it. Goals help give your workouts meaning.
📸 Do: Take a Before Picture
It might feel awkward at first, but trust me—you’ll be glad later. If you’re not into pictures, no problem. Grab a tape measure and jot down some quick stats: chest, waist, hips, thighs, arms, calves.
If you do take a photo:
- Use good lighting
- Get front, side, and back angles
- Wear the same outfit each time (sports bra and shorts work great)
- Snap a new one every 1–2 weeks
- And no, no one ever has to see them but you.
🧘 Do: Find a Workout You Actually Enjoy
Not everyone’s a treadmill junkie or weightlifting warrior—and that’s perfectly okay. Try different things:
- Group classes
- Strength circuits
- Walking with a friend
- Dance, yoga, stretching, you name it
Hate it? No biggie. Try something else. You’re not failing—you’re learning what works for YOU.
📅 Do: Put it on Your Calendar
Treat your workouts like appointments—because they are! Would you skip a dentist visit or cancel on your best friend last minute? Nope.
Each Sunday, peek at your week and plug in your workout times. Even 20 minutes counts. Mornings can be magic (less chance of interruptions), but any time that works is the right time.
💪 Do: Lift Something (Not Just Cardio!)
If you’ve only been doing cardio (hello, elliptical machine), you might be missing out. Strength training:
- Builds metabolism-boosting muscle
- Shapes your body
- Boosts bone strength
- Keeps you feeling capable and powerful
You don’t have to go beast mode—just start where you are.
🧘 Do: Track Everything
Whether it’s a digital device or a hand-written journal, record your workouts and other activities as well as your nutritional intake. Tracking everything will help you:
- Monitor your forward progress
- Hold yourself accountable
- Stay motivated
- Enhance your mind body connection.
❌ DON’T Be Scared of the Weight Room
Yes, it can feel intimidating. But most people are focused on themselves—not you.
Tips for bravery:
- Headphones on
- Playlist up
- Walk in like you belong (because you do!)
❌ DON’T Obsess Over the Scale
Daily weigh-ins can mess with your head. Weight fluctuates for tons of reasons.
Instead:
- Focus on how your clothes fit
- Celebrate small victories
- Check progress every couple of weeks—not every morning
❌ DON’T Make Excuses
There will always be a reason not to go. But you scheduled it, remember? Keep that promise to yourself. Even a short workout beats no workout at all.
❌ DON’T Beat Yourself Up
Skipped a few days? Had pizza twice this week? Welcome to being human.
Grace > guilt. You can restart anytime. Even today.
❌ DON’T Compare Yourself to Others
Comparison is the thief of joy—and motivation. Some people are farther along. That’s fine. You’re on your own journey. Come and join us. You feel welcome, comfortable and supported. It makes all the difference.
